On Being Careful about What We Say

I remember sitting in the back row of the bus coming home from school one day in sixth grade. I learned a new word and I couldn’t wait to find a chance to use it.

I came home, did my regular 11 or 12 year old things, and then found a chance to use it just before dinner.

I do not remember if my mom actually washed my mouth out with soap or if she threatened to if I ever said it again.

Real or imagined memory, I can still taste the soap.

Why Every Christian Should Fast

All of us have had a nurse say, “No food or liquids after midnight.” We sigh. Good grief, “How can I manage?”

We go to bed, midnight passes, and we wake up to count the hours until the medical procedure is completed so we can eat, drink, and be merry again.

For most of us, fasting before a medical procedure or test defines our full experience of fasting.

However, fasting has long been an important spiritual discipline in the Christian faith.

Every Christian should fast.

Trying to Get in Shape, Again . . .

I have never been comfortable in my own skin. I grew up skinny and self-conscious. I am no longer skinny, by a long shot.

I need to get in shape, again.

I have never been comfortable in my own skin. I grew up guilty and self-conscious. I am still guilty by a long shot.

I need to get in shape, again.

I am on a journey and I invite you to come along.
