What are Three Keys to Belonging to a Church?

I have been a member or served in sixteen churches from Missouri, Kentucky, Florida, and Tennessee. They have ranged in size from twenty people to more than three thousand. I have also worshipped in churches of different denominations in a half dozen other states and in the countries of Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Honduras, England, South Africa, and Botswana.

All of these experiences continually remind me of the breadth and depth of the Church and all the marvelous ways God is at work in the world through God’s people.

Are You Under Thirty and No Longer Religious?

As a dean and professor at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, I spend a lot of time with young men and women under the age of thirty. The privilege of my life rests in having conversations with them about faith, life, and vocation.

I also spend a lot of time in churches where increasingly more and more of the people are over the age of forty. It is a privilege to have conversations with them about faith, life, and vocation.

It often seems like I work in two different worlds. Most of all, it seems the church simply cannot figure out how to connect with the under thirty crowd.
